My Favorite Patriot

My favorite Patriot is Tedy Bruschi. For a lot of reasons - he's a class act, he's a linebacker (The One True Position) but mostly because he's a tremendous example of perseverance and dedication. In an era where the vapid & moronic are celebrated and fawned over by our celebrity culture and many of our athletes are thugs and/or dog-murderers, Bruschi stands out as an actual role model. You see, he suffered a stroke 3 years ago -- 1o days after winning the 2005 Super Bowl, 3 days after playing in the Pro Bowl -- that was nearly completely debilitating. And on Sunday he will play in his 5th Super Bowl. There is an excellent and uplifting article about his brush with death and admirable climb back HERE, and I will be wearing my Bruschi jersey on Sunday. Teammate Rodney Harrison puts it very well:

"What we've done," strong safety Rodney Harrison said, "is sport, not real life. What Tedy accomplished, it's pretty much a miracle, really. I mean, come on now, the two aren't even close."

Go Pats!

Hugh Masekela

My main man, live at SOB's.

Sickly Weekend

Was sick as a dog toward the end of the week so used the weekend to recuperate. Had tickets to see the Blind Boys of Alabama & the Dixie Hummingbirds on Friday but I wasn't feeling well enough to go (that's how bad it was) so had to eat the cost of the tickets. Played bocce on Saturday, but took it easy and came right home and watched movies. "Juno" & "Sweeney Todd" thanks to Matt. Been laying low all day today as I want to go see Hugh Maskela tonight. Feeling better, but still logy... In this picture, JD & The Wife transport my pale & sickly corpse back from Brooklyn after losing at bocce. Proof that JD does occasionally ride public transportation.

Boccestar Galactica

Our bocce team made its debut in the jerseys that I designed. Despite my valiant efforts, scoring the majority of our team's points, and Matt's sissy magic, we lost both of our 2 games although we kept them close. Bailey blew a key round that would have scored 2 points and likely ended up in our winning the first game, The Wife had way too much heat on the ball and parked many in to the back wall and out of play and our other teammates couldn't seem to summon their beginner's luck. Ah well, we'll get 'em next time and everyone marveled at our team name and jerseys...

Colbert in National Portrait Gallery

Per a recent episode and 3 part series "National Treasure: Portrait of Stephen", Stephen Colbert's portrait has been placed in "an appropriate place" in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. -- right between the bathrooms near the "America's Presidents" exhibit. From CNN.com:

[Colbert] boasted... his portrait was "hanging in the hall of presidents, just a few yards from the father of our country -- exactly where I believe it belongs."

"I don't mean to brag, but as it contains three portraits, my portrait has more portraits than any other portrait in the National Portrait Gallery," he said, adding, "All employees must wash hands before returning to work."

Wounded Warriors

Had a great time up at Windham for the Wounded Warriors.  Saw our buddy Jeff and his wife again.  On Friday, a group of second and third-graders came in and serenaded the soldiers with "Proud to Be an American" and "You're a Grand Old Flag."  Very moving.  A local paper did a good write-up of the event HERE, which even featured Jeff.

A Cajun Funeral

Went to Gano's father's funeral on Cottonport. Exceptionally well done. Great food, great people and Gano delivered the Greatest Eulogy I've Ever Heard.

Trophies

Jeffrey & I with the Sugar Bowl & National Championship trophies.

The Sugar Bowl

Jeffrey & I scalped $25 tickets. And we're 33 rows from the field. Awesome. Actually, scratch that... We just moved up to THREE rows from the field as there were empty seats. Best $25 I've ever spent... (Well... second best. My LSU bowling shoes from Rock n' Bowl are pretty great.)
